India has been tagged as a developing country for over a century now, but one cannot deny the fact that India has travelled a long way in the business world with many native individuals ruling the primes in the Silicon Valley. Entrepreneurship is nothing new in pre or post-independent India as many Indian based companies are frequently getting a spot in the fortune 500 companies, moreover, several entrepreneurs have also found their way to the Forbes list of richest person every year. The land has produced many entrepreneurs who have ruled their line of business and grown successful. Here is a list of top 10 most successful entrepreneurs from India:


DhirubhaiAmbani

DhirubhaiAmbani was born on 28th December 1932. His entrepreneurial career kickstarted by selling “bhajias” over the weekends. From this job he moved higher over the years and went on to build India’s largest private sector company. Ambani’s business diversified with time and he formed a petrochemical company with interests and stakes in FMCG, Communication, IT, logistics and power. Reliance possesses the distinction of being the first Indian company to reach the Forbes 500 list. DhirubhaiAmbani was also acknowledged as the Indian entrepreneur of the 20th century by FICCI. The magical businessman took his last breath on July 6th 2002.


JRD Tata

JehangirRatanjiDadabhoy Tata or JRD Tata, as he is popularly known, has the honor of being the nation’s first commercial pilot. He was the chairman of Tata& sons for a duration of 50 long years. JRD Tata was the individual who launched Air India, India’s first international airline. His constant growth made him the chairman of TATA & Sons in 1938. In the same year, the company owned 14 enterprises and almost 50 years later the count grew to around 95 enterprises under the leadership of JRD Tata. Sir Darboji Tata trust was successfully setup under his supervision. The trust also founded the Tata Institute of Social Science in 1936 along with Tata institute of fundamental research in 1945. November 29, 1993 was when JRD Tata breathed his last in Geneva.


Narayana Murthy

Most commonly known as the Father of Indian IT industry, NagavaraRamarao Narayana Murthy or Narayana Murthy was born in Bangalore on 20th August 1946. He is a famous Indian IT industrialist and also one of the six co-founders of Infosys, a multinational company that provides services in business consultancy, BPO operations, engineering and technology. Murthy completed his electrical engineering at National Institute of Engineering, University of Mysore and grabbed his M.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The industrialist formed Infosys in 1981 and managed as its CEO till 2002 and later as the chairman from 2002-2011. It is interesting to know that, he started the business with an initial investment of Rs 10,000 and today Infosys hold a market value of around $ 32 Billion with an employee strength of 142,308 people.


AzimPremji

AzimPremji enjoys the tag of being the Bill Gates of India. He is the chairman of the Wipro Technologies, one of the top software companies in India. At a very young age he took over the authority of his family business in 1966. He soon became the chairman of western Indian vegetable products. In his initial days, many doubted his ability as a leader, but under Premji’s guidance Wipro started flourished to offer world class IT and BPO services. Presently, Wipro Technologies is the largest independent R&D service provider in the nation. In the year 2000, the Asian week magazine listed him is the top 20 most powerful men across the world. According to Forbes, AzimPremji is tagged among the 50 richest people in the world from 2001.


Lakshmi Niwas Mittal

Lakshmi Niwas Mittal is a London based Indian steel tycoon. His story defines the true meaning of rags to riches. Lakshmi Mittal was born on September 2nd, 1950.  He completed his graduation from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Management, which is marked as India’s first business school. Mittal started his career by joining his father’s steel business but later decided to step out and started his own company. At present, he is the CEO and chairman of ArcelorMittal, the largest steel making company in the world. Lakshmi Mittal also holds 34% stake in a British football club Queen Park Rangers F.C.  Currently, his company treasures a production capacity 42.1 million tons and he holds a net worth of US $ 16.5 billion.


 Ghanshyam Das Birla

 Ghanshyam Das Birla is the primary soul behind the Birla Empire. He was born on April 10th, 1894 and apart from acting as an entrepreneur, he was also an important pre-independence contributor to the Indian National Congress. Ghanshyam Das Birla was also the creator of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and industry. His very first business assignment was a Cotton mill, later he expanded into jute business and transferred his base to Calcutta, known to be the world’s largest jute producing region. With time, the Birla Empire expanded and in 1919, The Birla Brothers limited was setup which included jute paper, cotton and sugar mills on a huge scale. Finally in the 1940s, the Birla’s entered into the territory of cars and formed Hindustan Motors. The company also expanded and diversified into cement, textile, chemicals, rayon’s and many more. Ghanshyam Das Birla died at an age of 90 in 1983.


ChandaKochhar

ChandaKochhar is the current MD&CEO of India’s largest private bank. In the male dominated banking sector in India, Kochhar has carved a fine place for herself.  This task wasn’t easy for the entrepreneur, but her sheer determination and willpower turned out to be the prime reason for her success. Kochhar’s sharp strategic planning has made ICICI bank the ‘Best Bank’ for five consecutive years. Moreover, she has been ranked 20th by Forbes amongst the most powerful women in business around the world. She is indeed a huge inspiration to women all over the world.
